Traffic Ticket Lawyer

paid a lawyer in cash to take care of traffic ticket which they did’t the firm is saying there no record of me
I got two tickets and hired a lawyer, about six months ago. I just found out that the firm didn’t represented me and I was found guilty because nobody showed for the court date. I paid them in cash. When I call the office they have no record of me coming to them. I cannot find my receipt. Can someone help me with this
I just found my reciept
Will get my money back and the extra cost for the other lawyer
You have two problems to resolve. Problem number one is the lawyer that failed to appear on your behalf after taking your money. That’s professional malpractice and also a serious ethical violation by the lawyer. If you have the receipt, you should immediately contact the state bar (the regulatory body, not the “bar association”) and enter a complaint against the lawyer. The state bar will force the lawyer to respond and lawyers who ignore state bar complaints can find themselves disbarred. You can usually obtain a state bar complaint form from your state’s bar’s website.
Your second problem is the adjudication of guilty on the tickets–which can be resolved by either appearing in person before the court that found you guilty and explaining the situation or by hiring a new lawyer (yep) to do that for you so that the court will vacate the guilty finding and provide a new date for trial. It’s within the court’s discretion as to whether or not they will vacate the guilty determination, but the odds are good that they will, particularly if you have the state bar complaint discussed in problem one to bolster your claim.
Regardless, don’t wait another minute to take care of either problem. Do both things ASAP.
Oh, and for all of the other answerers saying you were unwise to pay a lawyer in cash, while there’s something to the concept of never paying anybody without receiving proof of payment, the suggestion from a couple of people here that a lawyer paid in cash will always cheat you is the kind of thing that somebody who’s never had a lawyer would say. There may be a few bad apples out there but many criminal lawyers take cash from clients and very few lawyers deny receiving it or miss their clients’ court dates.
