What’s the difference between a DUI and DWI?
I know what the letters stand for, I just want to know how they are different? Anyone?
There are many different names for driving or operating under the influence. DWI (driving while impaired or intoxicated) is an older term and has been replaced in many states by DUI (driving under the influence)/OMVI (operating a motor vehicle under the influence)/OVI (operating a vehicle under the influence) and some now have different terms for drugged driving vs drunk driving (i.e. Ohio uses DUID)
In most states the penalties are the same under any of those names and only vary based upon levels of impairment or prior offenses.
